Rusty Stories – The Schwimmwagen, when the Beetle learned to swim

The Schwimmwagen belongs to that small category of vehicles that seem to come straight out of an idea that is as crazy as it is brilliant. Looking at it today, with its stubby shape, protruding wheels, and that boat-like appearance onto which four tires were almost jokingly bolted, it is hard to decide whether to call it a masterpiece of military engineering or the result of a bet won against common sense. And yet it worked. It really worked.

Its full name was Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmwagen. In German it simply means “floating car.” No poetic research, no aggressive marketing: the engineers of the time preferred practicality over imagery. After all, when a vehicle has to cross a river without sinking while a war is raging around it, imagination inevitably takes a back seat.

The story of the Schwimmwagen begins during the Second World War, when the Wehrmacht needed a light, compact vehicle capable of moving practically anywhere. The military campaigns on the Eastern Front had shown how terrain could become an enemy just as dangerous as opposing armies: mud, snow, non-existent roads, swamps, and waterways turned every movement into a major logistical problem.

Ferdinand Porsche and his team started from the Kübelwagen, the light military vehicle derived from the Volkswagen Beetle’s mechanics. The first amphibious prototype, the Type 128, appeared in 1940, but soon revealed structural limits: it was too large, too heavy, and tended to suffer in off-road use because it flexed due to its length. In short, it struggled exactly in the role it had been designed for. The solution came shortly after with the Type 166, more compact, lighter, and far more effective.

From a technical point of view, the Schwimmwagen was a small concentration of mechanical rationality. The body was a true watertight steel hull, designed to ensure buoyancy without external floats. There were no doors, and not for aesthetic reasons: introducing side openings on an amphibious vehicle would have been, to say the least, questionable. To get in, you literally had to climb over the side, with an elegance more reminiscent of a farmer crossing a fence than a military officer.

At the rear of the vehicle was one of its most distinctive features: a retractable propeller, manually lowered before entering the water. No sophisticated system, no automation; the driver would stop, operate the mechanism, and hope the river had no plans different from his. A brutally simple solution, yet incredibly effective, with propulsion taken directly from a connection to the drivetrain.

The engine was the famous Volkswagen flat-four air-cooled boxer, 1,131 cc, producing around 25 horsepower. Today a small city car easily produces three times that power, but in the 1940s that engine had the great advantage of being reliable, easy to repair, and resistant to extreme conditions. The Schwimmwagen reached about 80 km/h on land and just under 10 km/h in water. Not exactly a racing speedboat, but enough to cross a river without having to build a bridge under enemy fire.

The all-wheel-drive system was one of the most advanced aspects of the design. Combined with locking differentials and low weight, it allowed the Type 166 to handle terrain that often defeated much larger vehicles. On the Eastern Front, where Russian mud seemed to have a will of its own, the Schwimmwagen proved surprisingly effective. Ferry Porsche noted that it could often follow tanks in conditions considered impossible for other light vehicles.

Between 1942 and 1944, 14,283 units were built, an enormous number for such a specialized vehicle. It remains the most produced light amphibious vehicle of the Second World War. It was mainly used for reconnaissance, liaison duties, and light transport, operating on virtually all European fronts.

Of course, it was not without flaws. In water, speed was limited, high waves could create serious problems, and the cabin offered practically no comfort. Then again, the concept of comfort aboard a Schwimmwagen could probably be summed up as the satisfaction of having survived crossing the river.

And perhaps that is exactly what still makes it so fascinating today. The Schwimmwagen did not have the imposing presence of tanks or the symbolic prestige of fighter aircraft. It was a pragmatic vehicle, built to solve concrete problems in the most direct way possible. Every technical solution responded to a precise need, without unnecessary additions.

After the war, some examples were recovered and adapted for civilian use in a Europe devastated by conflict, although it was a rather delicate vehicle and spare parts were very hard to find. Over the decades, however, the Schwimmwagen has become above all a cult object for collectors and automotive history enthusiasts. Surviving examples are now extremely rare, and restoring them requires almost archaeological skills.

Seen through today’s eyes, the Volkswagen Type 166 appears as an extraordinary synthesis of engineering and pragmatism. A vehicle born in one of the most dramatic periods of the twentieth century, yet capable of leaving behind a technical legacy that still surprises. Because behind that almost caricature-like appearance lay a simple and revolutionary idea: if a road does not exist, then you might as well cross the river.

Of the roughly 14,000 Schwimmwagen built between 1941 and 1944, only about 400 known surviving examples have been recorded worldwide. Around fifty of them are in Italy. Numbers that clearly show how rare, almost legendary, this small German amphibious vehicle has become. Owning a fully restored one requires significant expense or, alternatively, very particular qualities: being a bit of an archaeologist, having the patience of Job, and the methodical nature of a Benedictine monk.

Ranieri, the owner of the Schwimmwagen featured in the photographs, is exactly that kind of person.

When he begins telling the story of his vehicle, he is not simply describing a restoration. He draws you into a journey made of research, intuition, mistakes, stubbornness, and passion. Within minutes, you find yourself experiencing every discovery with him, every recovered part, every difficulty overcome. And you quickly realize that restoring a Schwimmwagen does not mean repairing an old vehicle: it means bringing a fragment of history back to life. Ranieri had been searching for a Schwimmwagen for many years. Then, in 2019, the opportunity arrived: he obtained several components from different examples. At that point a work began that is an understatement to call complex. One part is recovered, another rebuilt, one repaired, one remade from scratch. Meanwhile, the search continues for missing components, impossible-to-find details, technical solutions forgotten for decades. With almost obsessive patience, what initially looked like little more than a pile of scattered wreckage slowly begins to take shape again. That is how another of the “amphibious brothers” is brought back to life.

Difficulties are not lacking. The Schwimmwagen’s sheet metal is extremely thin and delicate to work with; some anecdotes even suggest that certain panels were stamped using wooden molds, a solution that today seems almost unbelievable. In addition, sourcing original spare parts is extremely difficult. After the war, many surviving examples were still used for a few years, especially in agricultural or civilian contexts, but over time they were considered useless vehicles, dismantled without ceremony or simply left to rust.

This example, however, still retains its original identification plate. And here a curious almost romantic detail comes into play: Volkswagen, for a small fee, can still provide the vehicle’s production data. A kind of industrial birth certificate. The one belonging to Ranieri’s Schwimmwagen shows a precise date: December 31, 1943. While the world was engulfed in the chaos of war, someone in a German factory was completing this small amphibious vehicle destined to cross eighty years of history.

Then come the water tests. After months—indeed years—of work, sweat, cuts to the hands, and inevitable bandages, the Schwimmwagen finally returns to doing what it was designed for: floating.

And this is where the experience becomes something difficult to explain.

The waterline sits practically at elbow height. One slightly larger wave is enough to see water entering the cabin and to seriously consider the possibility of becoming an unintended small submarine. The “rudders,” in fact, are simply the front wheels. No nautical sophistication: you steer as on land and hope the lake or sea agrees. And yet it works.

And that is precisely the beauty of the Schwimmwagen: it conveys the same sense of fragile courage that probably accompanied the pioneers of aviation. You know perfectly well that everything seems absurd, unlikely, almost precarious… but it keeps going anyway.

To describe it, Ranieri uses a perfect metaphor: that of the hornet. According to a famous legend, the hornet is not aerodynamically designed to fly, but it doesn’t know that—and it flies anyway. “The Schwimmwagen is the same,” he says with a smile. “It is bad on water, maybe even worse on land… but it hasn’t studied physics, so it keeps going anyway.”
